Crystal Bubble Palace is a video installation specially commissioned for Glasshouse, ZIAN Gallery’s project space, inspired by its five-sided glass structure. The video juxtaposes hazy imagery and soundscapes of rising heat from New York City streets, kitchen smoke, and steam on bathroom mirrors with moments of magical transformation and attacks by female characters from the artist’s childhood media influences: Ami Mizuno’s Bubble Spray attack in Sailor Moon, the serpent spirits in Legend of the White Snake, and demonic metamorphoses in Journey to the West. Mist, steam, foam, glass—these are not only materials but metaphors. They connect feminine fantasy and discipline, fragility and strength, ephemeral illusions and transformative potential. Intertwining these aqueous motifs with Peter Sloterdijk’s critique in his Spheres trilogy, the work asks: Could foams—ephemeral, collective, and fluid—serve as a soft yet radical force to reconfigure our world?
